Light Scattering of Normal Human Lens
نویسنده
چکیده
Light-scattering intensities in the I11 and I+ mode were obtained on thin sections of three human lenses. Random density and orientation fluctuation theory, without cross correlation, was employed to evaluate light-scattering parameters. Both the density correlation distances, as well as the orientation correlation distances, were related to structural elements in the lens fiber cell that have been observed by other investigators with different techniques. The magnitude of these fluctuations were evaluated, and it was demonstrated that the density fluctuations are the main contributors to light scattering in normal human lenses. Changes in the light-scattering parameters were evaluated as a function of position within the lens. The changes observed agree with the biochemical data in the literature that reflects that an aging process occurs when one proceeds from the periphery of the lens toward the center.

Quantitative verification of the existence of high molecular weight protein aggregates in the intact normal human lens by light-scattering spectroscopy.
The method of quasi-elastic light-scattering spectroscopy was used to establish quantitatively the concentration of high mmolecular weight (HMW) aggregates present in the normal human intact lens as a function of age. The concentration of HMW proteins increases monotonically with age. HMW proteins are absent in the infant lens, but represent 3% of the total soluble lens protein at age 60 years....

متن کاملDepth-dependent forward light scattering by donor lenses.
PURPOSE To determine quantitatively forward light scattering in the human lens as a function of depth. To use this to explain the psychophysical result, verified earlier in vitro, showing total light scattering in the human lens to decrease with scattering angle according to an approximate power law (power -2). METHODS The amount of light scattered by donor lenses (n = 15; age range, 43 to 82...

Normal development of the visual system in infants relies on clear images being projected onto the retina, which can be disrupted by lens opacity caused by congenital cataract. This disruption, if uncorrected in early life, results in amblyopia (permanently decreased vision even after removal of the cataract). Doctors are able to prevent amblyopia by removing the cataract during the first sever...
متن کاملClinical method for measurement of light backscattering from the in vivo human lens.
A simple clinical method for measurement of light backscatter from defined regions of the lens in vivo is described. Light scattering was quantitated in 168 lenses of 85 "normal" subjects spanning 8 decades of life. The results indicate that light scatter from the anterior capsule does not change with age. The light scatter from the anterior cortex is quite significant even in young lenses and ...
